About the country
Czech Republic is a country which in major part consists of highland mountain area of Czech Massif. The total length of highways and roads in Czech Republic is 1243 km (evidence from the beginning of year 2018). Truck traffic is prohibited on Sundays and holidays (between 1:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.). It is so also during holiday season from 1st of July to 31st of August (on Fridays between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and on Saturdays between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.).
Since 1st of January 2016 in Czech Republic there are no more expressways – throughout the country there is only the motorway network. Expressways with lower technical parameters have been replaced by „roads for motor vehicles”. Maximum speed allowed on motorways for trucks with weight above 3,5 tonnes is 80 km/h (both on cities, as well as outside).
Travelling around Czech Republic it is good to remember about road charges – there are so-called vignettes and tolls. Vehicles with the permissible weight of 3,5 tonnes are obliged to aquire adhesive vignette, which can be purchased on bigger petrol stations, in post offices or via Internet.
Moreover, since year 2010 all motor vehicles with the permissible weight above 3,5 tonnes are charged with the toll. Its amount depends on a.o. vehicle type, emission class and area in which we travel. To pay the fee it’s necessary to have an electronic on-board device. Thanks to it the toll is being automatically charged after going through a control gate.
